Types of Migraines

Migraines are a type of headache that can be debilitating and affect your quality of life. Migraines are not only brutal, but they are throbbing headaches that may come with other symptoms, such as problems with vision and nausea. While it is true that migraines rank among the highest in terms of severity, not all migraines are the same. Some migraines can severely impact vision, while others may only affect a specific part of our body.

Proper chiropractic therapy can help alleviate pain associated with migraines. At Cape Coral Family Chiropractic in Cape Coral, FL, our chiropractors can evaluate and identify various types of migraines and provide high-quality chiropractic care to help manage pain associated with migraines. Here are common types of migraines we often treat.

Migraine With and Without Aura

Understanding the different types of migraines requires awareness of common and less common migraines. Common migraines are migraines without aura. Regular symptoms include throbbing headaches on one side of the head ranging from moderate to severe. Sensitivity to light and sound, along with nausea or vomiting, are usually present. Migraines with aura are often associated with visual and sensory disorders, causing problems with vision, speech or communication, and the physical body, such as tingling and numbness in the hands, body, face, and fingers.

Hemiplegic Migraine

One of the rarest forms of migraine with aura, hemiplegic migraine, impacts one side of the body. A hemiplegic migraine attack often mimics symptoms of a stroke, including weakness of one side of the body, sudden severe headache, and speech disorders.

Migraine with Brainstem Aura

Migraines with brainstem aura also fall under migraines with aura. Vision, sensory, and speech disorders slowly appear prior to headaches associated with migraines. Additional symptoms, such as vertigo, tinnitus, and ataxia, are also present.

Retinal Migraine

Retinal migraine, another type of aura-related migraine, is an eye disorder that can lead to visual disorders prior to the onset of a headache. Retinal migraine is monocular, meaning that it affects only one eye. Symptoms, such as quick bouts of flashing or flickering lights and blindness, are fortunately temporary.

Silent Migraine

Migraines without head pain are known as silent migraines. Lasting about 20-30 minutes, symptoms may include nausea and common migraine indicators. Although similar to regular migraine symptoms, silent migraines typically suggest an aura-type migraine.

Chronic Migraine

Chronic migraines are prolonged headaches that occur for more than 3 months and can last more than 15 days. Chronic migraines are associated with common migraine symptoms.

Abdominal Migraine

Abdominal migraines occur in the stomach instead of the head. It is common among children, but adults are also susceptible to abdominal migraines. Stomach pain, vomiting, and nausea are common symptoms.
