Herniated Disc FAQs

What Is a Herniated Disc?

The spine is made up of several vertebrae. In between each of these bones is a tiny dis. The disk is filled with a gel-like liquid substance that works to absorb impact as you bend and move. Sometimes though, the walls of the disk become torn or damaged, which can cause some cushioning gel to escape. When this happens, the disk is said to have herniated. While this condition is commonly considered a degenerative disk disorder, becoming more common as people age, it is possible to have a herniated disk as a result of a direct impact or injury. At Cape Coral Family Chiropractic, we treated herniated discs for many years.

What Are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of a herniated disk will vary depending on the location of the injury. For people who have suffered a herniated disk in the upper back or neck, symptoms are most commonly felt in the shoulders, neck, arms, and hands. Pain can range from a dull ache to sharp, stabbing pain. Numbness and tingling may radiate out toward the hands and fingers. For injuries in the lower back, pain is typically felt in the buttocks, legs, and feet, and is often accompanied by numbness and tingling. Often, people with a herniated disk will report feeling clumsier than usual with frequent trips and drops.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor can help treat a herniated disk with a variety of techniques. Chiropractic medicine is based on restoring balance to the body. Typically, this can be achieved by manual manipulation to put bones and tissues back into proper alignment. Other treatment methods might include physical therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, or massage therapy. For a herniated disk injury, the intent is to relieve pressure on the disk to allow it to heal properly. This can be accomplished through just one technique or a combination of several. We will perform a full evaluation when you come for your initial appointment. We understand that each patient is an individual, and will require a custom treatment plan.

Our team at Cape Coral Family chiropractic is dedicated to health and overall wellbeing. We understand how painful and debilitating a herniated disk injury can be, and we are here to help.
