Most jobs fit into one of two categories: manual labor or office work. Both can lead to a workman's comp injury, so it’s essential to understand proper ergonomics for both settings. Our team at Cape Coral Family Chiropractic has put together the following guide to help.
Sprains and strains are some of the top workman's comp injuries and they typically come from repetitive motions and lifting. To prevent experiencing a work injury in this category, there are a few steps to take.
It might seem odd to some that a sedentary job can cause a work injury, but it’s true. Everything from sprains and strains to herniated discs can occur. However, you can prevent many of these with proper ergonomics through the following categories.
Your chair should be completely adjustable so that you can place it at a height where your feet can be on the floor at a 90-degree angle. The back should be close enough to you that you can comfortably lean against it while remaining upright. It should also provide lumbar support.
It’s vital to maintain proper posture at your workstation. This means that your computer monitor should be just slightly below eye level. Your keyboard and mouse should be within easy reach. Keep your elbows close to your body, and keep your neck and head relaxed. It’s also a good idea to set a posture check reminder on your phone.
Poor lighting will push you to lean forward so that you can see more clearly. Forego this temptation with good lighting. Also, consider an anti-glare screen for your monitor.
It’s also wise to get up, walk around, and stretch regularly. Set a timer on your phone to take a break after sitting in your chair for about an hour.
