Chiropractic care for Headaches

Headaches and head pain interrupt the daily lives of more than half the global population. Yes, I mean 50% of the world suffers from some type of headache disorder, yet many of them go undiagnosed and untreated by professional health care providers. Headaches are considered one of the most common disorders of the nervous system and are divided into two main categories: primary and secondary headaches. Primary headaches include the infamous migraine, tension-type headaches, and the lesser known cluster headaches. Secondary headaches occur due to other conditions or situations. For example, dehydration, sinus infections, concussions, high blood pressure, or even ice cream can be some of the more benign causes of secondary headaches. It is important to note that having a health professional evaluate you is imperative for recent onset headaches or a headache that is worse than any previous one you have experienced.

Since many headaches are due to interruptions in the nervous system, chiropractic care and spinal adjustments can help! Recent research has shown the misalignment of the spine can cause increased muscle tension and pressure leading to neck pain and headaches. These are commonly known as tension-type headaches and are frequently caused by prolonged work posture. Many times, individuals can feel immediate relief and reduction of headache symptoms and neck pain after receiving a chiropractic adjustment. Other forms of headaches, such as migraines are a little more complex and are often treated with specific medications. Chiropractic care can still offer relief through a customized treatment plan if you find that you do not have permanent relief through conventional medicine.

If you are suffering from headaches, there are a number of things you can do to pin-point what may be triggering the headaches and get relief. Starting a headache diary or journal is often recommended to determine “triggers” for headaches and migraines. Simply write down activities, foods, emotional feelings in a notebook on days you experience headaches. Often times, a pattern will emerge and may reveal that you may have a food allergy, are not drinking enough water, or maybe not enough sleep. These diaries can be very informative and help health professionals determine the type of headache you are experiencing and develop the appropriate treatment plan. We also recommend taking frequent breaks and stretching often. Typically, every 30 minutes is best. If you must remain in a seated or fixed position for long periods, try stretching your neck and shoulders gently to avoid too much muscle tension. Drinking water is also an effective way to reduce the likelihood of headaches. Staying hydrated throughout the day and keeping the muscle loose can greatly decrease headache presentation in a majority of individuals.
